iCloud, Mac OS X Lion and iOS 5 confirmed for WWDC

Written By technotheory on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 | 8:22 AM

Likely iPhone 5 will be delayed - Apple has announced that it will be indeed be releasing iCloud at this year's WWDC in June, although it looks like the launch of the iPhone 5 will be subject to delay.

In a rare email, which maps out what will be shown at WWDC, Apple explained:

"Apple CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00am.

"At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software - Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple's advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch; and iCloud, Apple's upcoming cloud services offering."

No iPhone 5

There's no word on the iPhone 5, so it seems that Apple is launching iOS 5 first and then focusing on the launch of the iPhone 5 at a later date.

The release continued: "WWDC will feature more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers. Mac developers will see and learn how to develop world-class Mac OS X Lion applications using its latest technologies and capabilities.

"Mobile developers will be able to explore the latest innovations and capabilities of iOS and learn how to greatly enhance the functionality, performance and design of their apps. All developers can bring their code to the labs and work with Apple engineers."

So, the rumour and conjecture over Apple's cloud plans is over - Apple iCloud UK release date is set for 6 June at the WWDC.

There's been a lot of talk about Apple getting the majority of music labels to sign on to iCloud, a service which is set to take MobileMe and add music streaming and possibly movie streaming to the mix.

Updated Apple iPhone app to allow users to custom-order a Mac

Written By technotheory on Saturday, May 21, 2011 | 7:44 PM

As part of the Apple Store 2.0 makeover, the store's iPhone app is about to change. Speculation is that the new app will allow users to custom-order a Mac like you can now on the store's web site. Besides configuring a Mac to your liking by picking your choice of a processor, memory, hard drive and other hardware selections, you should also be able to make a one-on-one appointment, add AppleCare or order a printer. Right now, the app allows you to order only a stock configuration of a Mac. The revised app is expected to launch tomorrow.

The Apple Store 2.0 overhaul is expected to replace paper price signs with Apple iPad 2 displays. Store workers will have a new RetailMe app to work with as well as being issued an iPad 2 to use in the store.

As far as updating the Apple Store app for the iPad, it is expected that Apple will keep the status quo on the tablet due to the device's larger sized screen which makes navigation on the iPad a lot easier than on the Apple iPhone.

'Mac Defender' trojan causing Mac users woe

Scareware "under investigation" by Apple - A scareware programme known as 'Mac Defender' is currently causing an increasing number of Mac users woe by demanding payment to remove viruses it claims to have found on their machines.

The programme appears to automatically download to unprotected machines, exploiting the default 'open files after download' setting of most web browsers.

Although the user must provide an administrator name and password to install the bogus software, a 'significant number' of users seem to have done just that.

The software then autoruns, makes out like its scanning the Mac for viruses and asks users for credit card details in order to remove the viruses it claims to have found.

Mouldy Apple

Apple support staff have been instructed that: "AppleCare does not provide support for removal of the malware. You should not confirm or deny whether the customer's Mac is infected or not."

As well as Mac Defender, the malware also occasionally calls itself "Mac Protector" and "Mac Security", and is spreading through legitimate advertising networks and 'poisoned' Google searches.

Mac users should disable the 'open files after download' option in their browser settings to avoid accidentally installing the programme.

The Guardian reckons an organised gang is behind the scam, although it's not clear where the evidence for this supposition has come from.

Either way, it's a sad day for Mac users, many of whom thought themselves somewhat untouchable in the virus/malware arena.
